The Slavic collection has been actively developed since the early s, with some South Slavic book exchanges dating back to the s. Materials are acquired from dealers throughout the world and KU Libraries maintain book and serial exchanges with over libraries and scholarly institutions in Eastern Europe and Russia. The Slavic people live in Europe, speak Slavic languages and share common culture and history. Today the Slavs inhabit most of Central and Eastern Europe and the Balkans. The collection of Slavic folktales consists of nine books with folktales: 47 Russian folktales, seven Polish folktales, 35 Czech and Slovak folktales, 27 Ukrainian.
